What does being a self-employed Ambassador look like?
You tell us your availability for the next 6 weeks and we will strive to fill those days up with bookings at sites.
You will generally be booked into sites within 20–45 minutes from where you live.
You turn up on site, we suggest, ready to start at 10am, set up your stand and start chatting to the public.
You generally finish around 4pm but can work longer if you wish.
You are paid a fee for each person you secure as a donor of the charity.
On average our self-employed Ambassadors are paid £3-400 per shift.
People generally work 2-3 days a week.
You invoice us, we can help you with this, and are paid every 2 weeks.
WHO IS HOSPISCARE?
Hospiscare is the local hospice charity for Exeter, and mid and east Devon — supporting people living with a life-limiting illness, and the families around them, since 1982.
Origins
Hospiscare began with one man's conviction that Devon needed dedicated end-of-life care. On a cold January night in 1982, Dr John Searle held a public meeting at Exeter's Guildhall to explain the case for a local hospice service. He expected a handful of people. Instead, more than 400 turned up — so many that people were left standing out in the street in a blizzard. By March that year, two community nurses were already working within six miles of Exeter Cathedral, and Hospiscare was born.
The charity grew steadily from there: its Searle House hospice and specialist ward opened in Exeter, an education suite followed in 2008 to train healthcare professionals in palliative care, and further day hospices opened in Tiverton (2011) and Honiton (2015) to bring care closer to people who couldn't easily travel.
What it does today
Hospiscare now supports over 2,000 patients a year, aged 18 and up, across more than 1,000 square miles of Devon — from Exeter to Okehampton and out to North Dartmoor. Its care is rated "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission, and includes:
Support at home from specialist nursing teams, including a rapid response service
An 8-bed specialist ward in Exeter for round-the-clock medical care
Day hospice and outpatient services in Exeter, Tiverton and Honiton
Advice and emotional support for patients, families and carers
Bereavement support, including for children and young people
Training for GPs, nurses and other professionals in palliative care
Hospiscare is an independent charity and receives only around 20% of its funding from the NHS. It needs to raise roughly £8–10 million every year to keep its services free at the point of need for everyone who relies on them.
