About Helm Campaigns

A different kind of fundraising agency.

Helm Campaigns is a face-to-face fundraising agency that works exclusively at private sites — farmers markets, country shows, garden centres and shopping centres.

All contractors who represent Helm Campaigns are self-employed. They choose which opportunities to take on, and when. Some represent one charity, others represent several.

Why we started Helm

The model hadn't changed. The world had.

Face-to-face fundraising has been part of the charity landscape since 1997. But society and the market have changed enormously in that time — and the industry has kept trying to squeeze the original model into a changed landscape.

We are creating something different. A smarter model that engages a different section of the workforce, offers genuine flexibility, and operates in environments that encourage better donor interaction — interactions that increase donor retention and long-term value.

Helm was founded by three people with decades of combined experience in face-to-face fundraising, who believed there was a better way.

"The industry keeps trying to squeeze the original model into a changed landscape. We are creating something different."

The people behind Helm

Rory White

Rory White

Founder

Rory White began recruiting for the charity sector in 1997. He later established Flow Caritas, building it into a trusted partner for sourcing talent across both fundraising operations and charity head office leadership roles.

Over the years, he has played a key part in shaping fundraising teams at some of the UK's most recognisable charities, including Shelter, British Red Cross, Oxfam, Barnardo's, Médecins Sans Frontières, Scope, The Children's Society, EveryChild, and the League Against Cruel Sports.

He has since taken that deep expertise in fundraising and development and successfully expanded into the education sector, helping schools and institutions build high-performing advancement, alumni, and development teams.

Matt Atkinson is a Founder and MD at One Sixty Fundraising, a US and UK based face-to-face agency specialising in donor retention and creative campaigns. He has nearly 20 years of experience in face-to-face fundraising, including overseeing the recruitment of over 150,000 supporters at One Sixty.

Previously he helped establish in-house F2F programmes at Shelter, The Children's Society, Scope and Battersea — some of the UK's largest charities — and has extensive experience consulting and helping to establish non-profit F2F programmes around the world.

Founder

Prior to co-founding One Sixty Fundraising International, Matt played a leading role in the national expansion of Shelter's in-house team and its social enterprise venture, The Street Academy.

As a consultant, Matt has supported charities of all sizes in the UK and abroad, working with remarkable causes on both sides of the Atlantic. These experiences have resulted in a passion for helping deliver great donor acquisition programmes, which he knows underpin great staff recruitment.

Through Good People Collective, Matt offers expertise to in-house operations in the UK — with a belief that recruitment is everything when it comes to successful in-house programmes.
